People's Pharmacy: chemicals in air fresheners may affect respiration - Athens online

For years, I had awakened in the middle of the night unable to breathe through my nose. This disrupted a good sleep, as I would have to stand and sit for 20-30 minutes waiting for my sinuses drain.300_advertisement_header.gif

I he blames the lack of moisture, since it never happened while I was on vacation at the beach twice year.

I read recently that home deodorants contain formaldehyde distillates and petroleum, the aerosol propellants and p-dichlorobenzene (PDB) which can irritate the nasal passages. I unplugged immediately all my cleaners of air, and after one day, I was surprised at the results.

I slept now directly through the night for about two solid weeks. Who would imagine that plug-ins may cause such misery sinus?

Air fresheners contain a variety of chemicals that can irritate the respiratory tract. PDB, found in mothballs and air fresheners, could lead to reduced lung function (Environmental Health Perspectives, August 2006).

Among the other compounds found in phthalates air fresheners. They are often used to transport the fragrance consumer products. Phthalates are also used to manufacture flexible plastic products. These chemicals are controversial, because they are hormone disruptors and carcinogenic potential.

I've had thinned hair since I started on blood pressure meds. I had to switch to short haircuts. Since then, I was put on atenolol, Norvasc, Diovan and enalapril. I suspect that the beta blocker is responsible for the fact that you can see more scalp than hair.

Even with the shorter cutting, punkiest, you see scalp and it is embarrassing.

I now have a myriad of wigs, but I can't seem to get used to them.

When women lose hair due to chemotherapy, it is filled with empathy. Say: this is my blood pressure pills does cause the same reaction. I am now 62, therefore this lasts for years, but it has become much worse since my atenolol.

Hair loss is often a secondary effect underestimated drugs. Prescribers may not mention this complication.

You are right that atenolol, like other beta blockers, can cause loss of hair. Diovan, amlodipine (Norvasc) and enalapril are somewhat less likely to trigger this reaction.

Find the best treatment of blood pressure which causes hair loss, it will take some research by your doctor.

What happened to Pepcid? I could find in stores, especially Pepcid Complete. What product would you recommend to replace?

PEPCID Complete is a free product for heartburn. It contains a drug called famotidine acid deletion more a combination antacid fast action of carbonate of calcium and magnesium hydroxide.

The company (Johnson & Johnson) has had its share of manufacturing and the difficulties of packaging in the past year, with products such as Tylenol, Benadryl and Sudafed recalls, and Pepcid. A spokesman assures us, however, that complete Pepcid should be back on the shelves of the pharmacy in a few weeks.

When I met the woman wife, she had bad breath, obviously from deep inside. I ignored, as I could think of no solution.

After 15 years of marriage, I realized that it was even worse after she ate ice cream. LACTAID solved the problem. Bad breath has been his only symptom.

You are the person second report that the inability of condensed milk sugar (lactose intolerance) has led to bad breath.

Although we could find no scientific evidence to confirm this observation, with a pill of enzyme lactase (Lactaid) appears as a simple solution.

Recently, you respond to a person who has low nails. You mentioned some treatments, but it has not pointed out that this could be a symptom of hypothyroidism.

Often small things as brittle nails and dry skin are neglected and never mentioned to the doctor because of their apparent insignificance. Some of these seemingly unrelated problems might be a feature of a more serious health problem, especially when they occur in a constellation of symptoms. With hypothyroidism, brittle nails, dry skin, hair loss, low memory, ranging with concentration, weight gain and depression are all indicators.

Any condition that does not improve as expected could be signalling an underlying problem. It is best to find and treat the cause, not just the symptom.

You have described several symptoms of a thyroid gland lazy. Other signs include constipation, fatigue, cold intolerance reduced libido, elevated cholesterol and slow pulse. Because these complaints are so common, they are sometimes neglected or rejected.

We will send you our "Guide to Thyroid Hormones" with more details on the symptoms, the interpretation of laboratory test and various treatment options.
